How to Improve Your Studying Environment

1. Don’t listen to music.

Listening to music can be tempting and in some cases, useful. However, studies show that listening to music while studying hinders your ability to remember information.

  2. Have a hot beverage nearcoffee-cupby

Studies show that drinking a hot beverage while you study increases focus.

While studying on a beanbag chair in pajamas sounds preferable, it is not the way to go. Sitting in a chair at a desk increases focus and helps you get your work done faster. Just make sure to get up and walk around at least every hour — sitting for too long can have bad effects on your body. (NOTE: a rigid chair does not need to be uncomfortable).

When we sleep, our brain strengthens new memories. So, if you study right before you go to bed, you’re more likely to remember the information because they are newer memories. However, this DOESN’T mean start studying at 3 AM the night before a test.

Studies show that students who were exposed to the color red before a test did more poorly on it than students who were not exposed to it. So, I would avoid this color, especially if it is the night before the assessment.

The color blue has been shown to improve focus. If possible, study in a blue room, use blue fonts, write in blue ink, etc.

Using fonts that are harder to read (such as a Sans Serif font) increases your ability to remember the information.
